# Projects, Models, and Versions

> How workspaces, projects, models, and versions nest — and how to find your way around.

GingerBIM organizes your work as a nested hierarchy: **workspaces** contain **projects**, projects contain **models**, and each model has **versions**. Understanding how these nest is the fastest way to find your way around.

## The hierarchy

* **Workspace** — your team's home: one workspace per team, holding all of the team's projects and collaborators. You reach a workspace at a URL like `/workspaces/<slug>`. Invite members and manage the plan here.
* **Project** — where a job's models, sheets, and discussions live. A project can cover one building or several — a condominium project with multiple blocks is still one project. Its home page is at `/projects/<id>`.
* **Model** — a discipline or part of the project, such as Architecture, Structure, or MEP. A project can have many models. You open a model in the 3D viewer at `/projects/<id>/models/<id>`.
* **Version** — a published snapshot of a model at a point in time. Each version has a version number, an author, an optional message, and a preview image. New versions are created when someone publishes updated geometry (for example, after re-importing an IFC).

## Opening a project and a model

1. From your workspace or dashboard, click a project to open its home page. The project page has tabs across the top — **Models**, **Canvas**, **Discussions**, **Collaborators**, **Settings**, and more.
2. On the **Models** tab you'll see the project's models. Click a model to open it in the 3D viewer.
3. The viewer loads the model's latest version by default and gives you the toolbars for selection, drawings, schedules, and the object sidebar.

## Versions and version history

A version is a saved state of the model — you can always go back to an earlier one.

* Open the **Versions** panel in the viewer to see every version of the loaded model, each shown as a card with its number, message, and preview.
* Click a version card to **switch** the viewer to that version. The version you're viewing is encoded in the model URL, so you can copy the link to share that exact state.
* Use the "go to latest version" control to jump back to the newest snapshot.
* A model page also has a dedicated **Versions** view (`/projects/<id>/models/<id>/versions`) listing the full history.

## Viewing several models at once (federation)

You can open more than one model in the same viewer to see them combined — for example, Architecture plus Structure. When the loaded models belong to the same building, the viewer treats them as one federated scene, and features like drawings can span the whole set.

## Tips

<Tip>
  **Models = disciplines, versions = history.** If you're looking for "the latest structural model," that's a *model*; "what it looked like last week" is a *version*.
</Tip>

* The viewer URL carries which model(s) and which version(s) are loaded, so links are precise and shareable.
* Most project-level features (sheets/canvas, collaborators, settings) are reached from the tabs on the project home page, not from inside a single model.
